Robot for wrapping long panels

Robot for wrapping long panels

In this video demonstration, we show the Atlanta Stretch Neos pallet wrapping robot in action, wrapping extremely long 14-metre panels quickly and efficiently. Applications like this highlight exactly where robotic pallet wrappers excel—when goods are simply too large or impractical to wrap on traditional machines.

Turntable pallet wrappers are designed for standard pallet sizes. When products become exceptionally long, such as structural panels, aluminium sections, timber beams, or long fabricated components, rotating the load on a turntable becomes impossible. Robots also excel at items like spa's or swim spas. This leaves many businesses thinking their only alternative is an orbital wrapping machine.

Why Orbital Wrappers Are Not Always Practical

Orbital wrappers can certainly wrap long products, but they come with a major limitation: conveyor length.

To operate correctly, an orbital wrapper usually requires conveyors both before and after the machine, often extending to double the product length. For a 14-metre panel, that could easily require 28 metres or more of conveyor space, plus the wrapper itself.

In many warehouses or production facilities, this creates two problems:

  • Space requirements that simply don't exist
  • High capital costs, often exceeding $100,000+ once conveyors and installation are included

For many operations, especially those wrapping long items only periodically, this type of investment is difficult to justify. However for those wrapping this type of product constantly and Orbital pallet wrapper maybe the better solution.

The Neos Robot: A Practical Alternative

The Atlanta Stretch Neos robotic pallet wrapper offers a far more flexible and economical solution.

Instead of rotating the product, the Neos robot drives around the load, applying stretch film while the goods remain stationary. This makes it ideal for:

  • Long panels
  • Oversized pallets
  • Heavy or unstable loads
  • Goods that cannot be rotated

Because the robot moves around the product, there is effectively no limit on pallet length. If the robot can drive around it, it can wrap it.

Best of all, the Neos system is available at a fraction of the cost of a full orbital wrapping line, making it an attractive option for manufacturers and distribution companies handling oversized products.

Wrapping the Ends – Something Orbital Machines Cannot Do

Another major advantage of the Neos robot is its ability to wrap the ends of long loads.

Orbital wrapping machines apply film around the centre of the product as it passes through the wrapping ring. While this secures the load, the ends of the pallet often remain exposed unless additional manual wrapping is performed.

With a robotic pallet wrapper like the Neos:

  • The robot can complete full revolutions around the load
  • Film can be applied along the entire length
  • The ends of the pallet can also be secured

This often results in better overall load containment compared to orbital wrapping systems. However on the other hand, a robot can not wrap the top or bottom of the pallet, where an orbital wrapper can, with any automated solution you can typically only wrap 4 of the 6 sizes of a rectangle or cube.

Pre-Stretch Technology for Major Film Savings

The Neos robot also features an advanced powered pre-stretch carriage, a key technology used across many Atlanta Stretch machines.

Pre-stretch carriages mechanically stretch the film before it is applied to the load, allowing:

  • 1 metre of film to stretch to up to 3 metres
  • Significantly lower film consumption
  • Improved load stability through consistent film tension

Compared to manual wrapping or basic friction-brake machines, this technology can reduce stretch film usage dramatically, lowering ongoing packaging costs.

For businesses wrapping large products, the savings in film alone can often justify the investment in a powered pre-stretch machine.

Flexible Wrapping for Oversized Loads

At MPS Packaging Australia, we regularly help customers who need to wrap products that simply don’t suit conventional pallet wrapping equipment.

The Neos robot is an ideal solution for situations where goods are:

  • Extremely long
  • Heavy or difficult to rotate
  • Oversized or irregularly shaped
  • Located in multiple wrapping areas
  • Dont have space for a larger fixed in place machine.

Because the machine is mobile and easy to reposition, it can also be shared between multiple wrapping stations within a warehouse.

In the video featured in this blog, you’ll see the Atlanta Stretch Neos robot wrapping 14-metre panels, demonstrating just how quickly and effectively robotic pallet wrapping can secure even the most challenging loads.

If your business is dealing with oversized pallets, long fabricated components, or products that cannot be wrapped on a traditional turntable machine, a robotic pallet wrapper may be the most practical and cost-effective solution available.
