If you’ve been using a Signode BXT2-19 battery strapping tool, you’ll know it’s one of the most reliable and efficient plastic strapping machines on the market. But like any mechanical tool, the BXT2 can occasionally jam—usually mid-cycle during the welding process or if the battery disconnects under load.
At MPSpack, we’ve seen this many times, and luckily the fix is simple when you know what’s happening inside the machine.
Why Your BXT2 Gets Jammed
A jam usually occurs when:
- The battery disconnects during a weld.
- The rocker lever is pulled while the tool is still welding.
- The welding shoe or cam ring stops partway through a cycle.
- A microswitch or PCB loses contact during operation.
When this happens, the rocker lever won’t move, and the tool may appear dead even after swapping batteries.
Step 1 – Try the Built-In Reset
Most jams can be cleared without tools.
- Set the BXT2 to fully automatic mode (green LED flashing).
-
Hold the welding button, then press the tension button.
The tool will attempt to finish its last welding cycle and move the internal cam ring back to its home position. - If you hear the motor run and the welding shoe lifts, you’ve successfully reset it.
If the lever remains stuck, don’t repeat this more than two or three times—overheating the motor could cause more damage.
Step 2 – Manual Reset (Mechanical Unjam)
If the welding shoe is still stuck down or the lever is locked solid:
- Remove the battery.
- Locate the small hole at the front of the base plate near the tension wheel side.
- Insert a 3 mm Allen key through the hole until you feel the screw head (position 164).
-
Turn counter-clockwise about 10 turns.
This manually rotates the cam ring away from the welding position. - Pull the rocker lever upward—you should see the welding shoe spring back up.
- Reinsert the battery and test the tool again.
This process realigns the welding mechanism and frees the tool without the need for disassembly.
Step 3 – If It’s Still Jammed
If the lever won’t release after the manual reset, there may be an electrical issue:
- Faulty microswitch (position 103).
- Damaged PCB or wiring harness.
In that case, the tool will require service or parts replacement.
Preventing Future Jams
To avoid future downtime:
- Always wait for the beep before lifting the tool from the strap.
- Never pull the lever mid-weld.
- Keep the battery locked in place and properly charged.
- Clean the tension wheel and tooth plate daily with compressed air.
Routine maintenance keeps the tension system smooth and prevents debris from blocking the weld unit.
