How prestretched film saved one client over $13000 per year

Atlanta stretch - Marathon

Thank you for considering the ATLANTA STRETCH Marathon Mobile Pallet Wrapper.   We recently reviewed the performance of our Marathon wrappers at one of our largest volume customers in conjunction with Pre-stretched film.

While MPS is a major importer and distributor of films, we strongly recommend the benefits of using an Australian made and owned Pre-stretched film.

Pre-Stretched Film

The recommended film on the Atlanta stretch Marathon is Pre-stretched film.

The Marathon wrapper uses a single friction roller to apply tension to the goods, its incapable of applying the required tension to stretch conventional films. (+50% stretch)

The following reasons and advantages are recommended for using pre-stretched films:

  • Pre-stretched film rolls are lighter in weight for easy of handling and whilst operating your Marathon wrapper.
  • The Pre-stretched film memory has been activated in a controlled environment ensuring a tight wrap to your goods with minimal tension on application.
  • Less film is required to protect your goods.
  • Single sided cling avoiding pallet to pallet stick.
  • Blown extrusion process offering superior puncture/tear resistance.
  • Reduce cost and consumption of plastic per pallet.
  • Less wear and tear of your Marathon wrapper.
  • Goods are readily available.
  • We have partnered with an Australian manufacturer, supporting Australian made and owned.

Cost saving benefits and Testing analysis.

In a recent test we did with a major online  retailer we found that pre-stretched film offered the following:-

  • Will save them approximately $13,520 per year at a site doing 100 pallets per day when using the marathon and pre-stretched film.
  • The environmental difference in the amount of PE (plastic) used at one site wrapping 100 pallets per day saving 260G per pallet, is over 6 tonne of plastic saved per year.

Test information

Previously the customer was using a 500mm x 2500mm imported cast film. Gauge/thickness/um was unspecified on the packaging, it worked out to be 12um. We wrapped the pallet and cut off the film performing a “cut and weigh test”. This is the most accurate way to check the cost of stretch film per wrapped pallet; please see the below table.

Test Product Grams used Nett weight roll Pallets wrapped per roll Cost per wrap
test 1 500x2500 imported CAST 440g 13.8 31.4 $3.01
Test 1 Pre-stretch blown 500x2000mm10um 180g 9.02 50.1 $1.69

Prestretched film, though generally pricier per roll compared to conventional films, proves to be a superior option, especially when utilized on a friction brake machine. When evaluating stretch film options, it's crucial to focus on the cost per pallet wrapped rather than solely considering the price per roll. Just like you wouldn't gauge a car's mileage solely based on the cost to fill up its tank, comparing wrap efficiency should be based on the cost per pallet wrapped, not just the roll price.
