How is Poly Tubing is Made?

Poly tubing, also known as layflat tubing, is one of the most versatile packaging products used across manufacturing, food, and logistics. At MPS Packaging Australia, we supply high-quality poly tubing that can be cut, sealed, or printed to suit a wide range of custom plastic applications. But how exactly is poly tubing made? The process begins with something calledΒ blown film extrusion which we discussed in a previous blog.Β

From Pellets to Plastic

The journey starts with small plastic resin pellets, usually polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE, or HDPE). These raw materials may be blended with additives such as UV stabilisers, colourants, or slip agents depending on the performance required. The pellets are fed into an extruder, where a rotating screw pushes them through heated zones until they melt into a thick, flowing liquid.

The Blown Film Process

Once molten, the polyethylene is forced through a circular die to form a thin-walled tube. Air is then blown into the center of this tube, inflating it like a bubble. This inflation stretches the film outward, adjusting the diameter and thickness of the tubing. It’s a precise process where airflow, heat, and extrusion speed are carefully controlled to achieve consistent quality.

Cooling and Collapsing

As the bubble rises, it is cooled using air rings or chilled systems to set the plastic. At the top of the tower, rollers flatten the bubble into double layers of film, creating what’s known as layflat tubing. This step ensures the tubing is seamless and uniform throughout its length.

Finished into Rolls

The flattened tubing is wound into rolls of continuous poly tubing, ready for use. Customers can cut it to length, heat seal it into custom bags, or leave it open for flexible packaging. For added functionality, MPS can also provide custom printing to brand the tubing or add handling instructions.

Why Choose MPS Poly Tubing?

At MPS Packaging Australia, our poly tubing is produced to meet the needs of modern businesses. Whether you’re packaging food, protecting manufactured goods, or securing items for shipping, our tubing provides a durable, adaptable, and cost-effective solution. With options for custom sizing, printing, and film blends, we ensure your packaging works as hard as your products do.
